Somnigroup’s $2.5-billion Leggett & Platt deal nears the finish line

Somnigroup International, formerly known as Tempur Sealy, is moving closer to completing its approximately USD 2.5-billion all-stock acquisition of Leggett & Platt. The company adopted the Somnigroup name in February 2025 following the integration of Mattress Firm. The Leggett & Platt deal, first announced in April 2026, had received nearly all required regulatory approvals by 6 August and remained on track to close by the end of the third quarter.

The acquisition could significantly expand Somnigroup’s control over the mattress supply chain. Leggett & Platt is a major supplier of bedding components, including mattress springs and other inputs. Bringing the supplier into its business would give Somnigroup greater control over production inputs while strengthening its position across manufacturing, brands and retail.

The deal represents another step in the bedding industry’s ongoing consolidation. Large manufacturers are increasingly looking beyond retail competition and acquiring companies that supply their products. If completed, the transaction could encourage other major mattress companies to consider similar vertical integration strategies.

CSIL Publishes Its 2026 Ranking of the World’s Top 100 Mattress Makers

Industry research organisation CSIL published its August 2026 edition of the “Top 100 Mattress Manufacturers in the World,” providing a global comparison of leading mattress producers. The ranking considers factors including company turnover, employee numbers and country of origin.

The report offers a broader view of the global mattress industry as consolidation increases in major markets. While the US market is becoming increasingly concentrated among large companies, the worldwide industry remains more diverse China continues to be the world’s largest manufacturing base, while India is emerging as one of the fastest-growing mattress markets. Hundreds of mid-sized manufacturers across different countries also continue to contribute significantly to global production.

The ranking shows that the global mattress market cannot be understood only through its largest companies. Regional manufacturers remain important because consumer preferences, distribution networks and pricing differ across markets. CSIL’s ranking therefore provides industry participants with a useful snapshot of the companies shaping global competition.`

US Trade officials reopen review of mattress import duties

The US International Trade Commission scheduled expedited five-year sunset reviews on 11 August 2026 to decide whether existing antidumping duties on mattresses imported from Cambodia, Malaysia, Serbia, Thailand, Turkey and Vietnam should continue. The review also covers countervailing duties on mattresses from China.

The purpose of the reviews is to determine whether removing these duties could result in a renewed increase in dumped or subsidised mattress imports that could harm US manufacturers. A similar review completed in late July found that duties on the same group of countries should remain in place.

The trade measures have had a significant impact on the global mattress supply chain since duties were introduced from 2021 onward. US retailers that depend on imported mattresses have had to reconsider their suppliers and look for alternative manufacturing locations to manage costs and reduce trade-related risks.

Countries such as Indonesia have gained attention as alternative sourcing destinations. Changes in US trade policy can therefore influence which countries become major mattress manufacturing and export hubs.

For the global mattress industry, the outcome of these reviews could affect manufacturing locations, sourcing strategies, import costs and competition among international suppliers. It shows how government trade policies can have an impact not only on US companies, but also on the wider global mattress supply chain.
