Hybrid mattresses are becoming really popular

Mr. Javier Subiñas, CEO, Subiñas Springs SL

Q What are the key differences between the spring mattress markets in Europe, North America, and emerging economies like India?

The main difference is really about how developed each market is and what people are used to. In Europe and North America, spring mattresses are the norm, and many customers are now looking for premium features like hybrid designs, extra comfort layers, and sustainable materials.

In India and other fast-growing markets, foam and coir mattresses are still more common because they’re affordable and familiar. But that’s changing quickly. As people’s lifestyles evolve and health awareness grows, so does interest in better sleep. That’s where spring systems especially our special pocket spring units can really make a difference.

We’ve been producing springs for decades in Bilbao, Spain, and have worked with many markets across Europe. That experience helps us adapt to new regions, always keeping sustainability and the circular economy in mind. We’re excited to bring that approach to India.

Q How important is sustainability in the spring mattress manufacturing process today? Are recyclable or low-emission materials being used more widely?

Sustainability is a must. More and more customers care about how products are made. They want to know that materials are recycled, glues are water-based, and production doesn’t waste energy.

At Subiñas Springs, we’ve made it a core part of what we do. As we grow our operations in Bilbao, we’re focusing on low-impact technologies that help us reduce waste and energy use. But beyond that, we also focus on making durable mattresses because a long-lasting product means less waste and a smarter, more responsible way to consume.

Q What trends are currently shaping the future of spring mattress manufacturing, are we seeing a shift toward hybrid or eco-friendly materials?

Definitely. Hybrid mattresses are becoming really popular because they mix the structure and breathability of springs with the comfort of foams or natural layers. People today want something that’s both comfortable and performs well.

At the same time, sustainability isn’t just a nice extra anymore it’s expected. We’re seeing a big shift toward recycled and recyclable materials, lower emissions, and making products that last longer. It’s all part of the circular economy, and we’re actively investing in that at our factory in Bilbao.
