AWS outage causes smart mattress nightmare for US users

The recent Amazon Web Services (AWS) outage led to discomfort for numerous users of a popular smart mattress cover in the US, leaving them stuck with overheated temperatures and awkward positions overnight as the devices went offline. The affected device, Eight Sleep’s Pod mattress cover, relies on AWS to manage its temperature control, biometric data tracking, and position adjustments. The widespread cloud network failure meant the mattress covers were locked into their last operational setting, causing significant disruption to sleep.

Eight Sleep CEO Matteo Franceschetti issued an apology on X (formerly Twitter): “The AWS outage has impacted some of our users since last night, disrupting their sleep. That is not the experience we want to provide and I want to apologise for it.”

Franceschetti outlined the company’s immediate response : Restoring features: All device functionalities are being restored as AWS stabilizes, though some users are still experiencing delays in data processing. Outage-proofing: The company is now working around the clock to implement measures to make the Pod experience resilient against future outages.

The internet-dependent nature of modern services was broadly highlighted by the AWS disruption. The outage crippled a vast array of popular online platforms from streaming services like Amazon Prime Video and Disney+ to banking, messaging services, Perplexity AI, the Fortnite game, Airbnb, Snapchat, and Duolingo, demonstrating the tech giant’s critical role in maintaining internet life. These high-tech mattresses are priced starting at over $2,000.

U.S. mattress market shrinks in Q1 2025 amid economic headwinds

The total mattress market experienced a significant slowdown in the first quarter of 2025, with sales dropping 5.7% in dollars and 11.2% in units compared to the same period last year. Total market sales, which include both domestic and imported units, reached $2.4 billion, a decrease from $2.5 billion in Q1 2024, while unit volume fell from 9.7 million to approximately 8.7 million. According to the International Sleep Products Association (ISPA), the quarter was negatively impacted by “Slowing economic growth, policy uncertainty and stubborn inflation.”

Performance varied by segment: U.S.-produced mattress sales fell 4.4% to $2 billion and units dropped 8.1% to 4.4 million. Imported mattresses faced a sharper decline, with dollar sales tumbling 23.7% to $84.9 million and units falling 18.6% to 1.2 million. Despite the drop in volume, the average price for a domestically produced mattress rose 4% to $452.63, which may indicate consumers are shifting their purchasing habits or that raw material costs are sustaining prices.
