Q Latex and imported mattresses occupy a premium niche, how do you build and sustain B2B relationships with high-end hospitality, healthcare, and residential developers who specify these categories?

In the premium segment, relationships are built on credibility, consistency, and customization rather than just pricing. High-end hospitality brands, healthcare institutions, and luxury developers are extremely quality-conscious and expect long-term performance, not just a product. Sustaining these relationships comes from delivering uniform quality across batches and aligning with their brand promise, whether it’s luxury, wellness, or clinical comfort.

Mr. Prateek Gupta,

CEO, India Mattress Company

Q What are the key logistical, regulatory, and quality assurance challenges does mattress industry navigate when importing mattresses or raw latex materials into India?

Importing in our industry involves a complex interplay of logistics, compliance, and quality control. Logistical challenges like bulky shipments, high freight costs, and long lead times require precise planning and inventory management. Adhering to customs documentation is critical. Any deviation can delay shipments significantly and maintaining consistency in imported latex (density, resilience, purity) is essential, as even minor variations can impact final product performance.

Q What due diligence process is needed to follow when onboarding international suppliers to ensure product authenticity, consistency, and compliance with Indian standards?

Factory audits and certifications that include verifying compliance with international standards such as GOLS, OEKO-TEX, and Eco-Institut. Sample validation and testing can be done in Independent labs testing for density, tensile strength, and chemical safety. Supply consistency checks by evaluating production capacity, batch uniformity, and historical performance.

Premium hotels now market sleep quality as a differentiator, investing in better mattresses to enhance guest experience and reviews. Operators are focusing on comfort to improve tenant retention and brand perception. There is growing emphasis on pressure relief, spinal support, and hypoallergenic materials.

Q What is your assessment of the domestic latex manufacturing capability in India, and do you see import substitution as a realistic opportunity or threat to your business model?

Domestic capabilities are improving, particularly in standardized products, but there is still a gap in high-consistency, export-grade latex foam. Import substitution is a long-term opportunity, but it will require investment in technology, process control, and certification ecosystems.
